PARTHENONAS

Grrek Deutsch

A walk on the cobbled streets of the traditional settlement Parthenon , located five kms north of Neos Marmaras and 350m above sea level, is enough to appreciate the architecture of its houses, its natural beauty and the wonderful food of Paul Karapappas traditional tavern overlooking the Toroneos gulf. Even on a foggy or rainy day the town still has something special in its atmosphere . A town that has remained untouched from the modern building techniques that altered the majority of settlements in Halkidiki after the 1960s.

In Parthenon there are two guest-houses; Mrs Olga's (+30 93 2428429) which can accommodate six to eight persons, and Mrs Vangelio's (+30 945 382384) known as "Parthenon" with eleven twin-bed rooms and one five-bed. Breakfast is offered by both landladies to be enjoyed next to the roses with a view of the Toroneos gulf and the isle Kelifos.
In one aspect the town owes its name to the ancient city Parthenopoli. The village was a dependency of the monastery "Kastamonito" of Mt. Athos and is already mentioned during the Byzantine period. After the establishment of Neos Marmaras and its rapid development, the people of Parthenon deserted their town to establish the western section of Neos Marmaras. On the 27th of July a traditional festival is held at St. Panteleimon church. At the same church quite a few couples decide to have their wedding ceremony .
